[edit] Purpose

The purpose of this site is to provide an objective, community generated resource for debating the possibility of re-legalizing, regulating, and/or reforming cannabis laws in Oregon.

[edit] Intended Audience

Oregon voters who are undecided about, unconvinced of the need for, and/or concerned about the consequences of cannabis law reform and regulation.

[edit] The Problem

Cannabis is an extremely versatile and very important plant for many reasons. It has literally thousands of uses, but most people know it simply as "pot", "marijuana", or "mary jane". A mild, relatively low-risk intoxicant.

Despite it's many beneficial uses, cannabis is not legal. Oregon farmers are legally prohibited from growing cannabis, and instead Oregon legally, and illegally, imports millions worth of cannabis every year from foreign states and countries.

After more than 70 years, the prohibition of cannabis has failed to achieve any of it's stated objectives -- it has not reduced use, it has not reduced availability, it has not reduced crime. Instead, the prohibition of cannabis has had many unintended side effects and long lasting negative consequences, among them:

  • Created and financed deadly criminal gangs and cartels
  • Cost Oregon billions of dollars in enforcement, and lost income
  • Forced us to use other more dangerous chemicals and pharmaceutical products
  • Caused prison overcrowding and bloated court systems

[edit] The Question

Oregon was the first state to decriminalize cannabis; should Oregon be the first to re-legalize and regulate it?
